Situated in the heart of the city centre at 97 Buchanan Street or on the top floor within Watt Brothers department store at the corner of Hope Street and Bath Street, the Willow Tea Rooms is the go-to place for meeting friends, celebrating a special occasion or a welcome break from a day’s shopping.

Established in 1983, both our Tea Rooms are inspired by the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Buchanan Street

At the Tea Rooms at 97 Buchanan Street, you will find the White Dining Room and Chinese (Blue) Room modelled on Kate Cranston’s original Ingram Street Tea Rooms in the 1900s which was designed by Mackintosh.  The contrast in colours of both rooms adds to the atmosphere of the Tea Rooms with our visitors having their own favourite room.

The White Dining Room features the very distinctive replica high-backed Ingram Street chairs and by using these throughout the room we have created a feeling of intimacy at each of the tables.  Of course, not all our visitors want intimacy! Many much prefer one of our bench seats which overlook Buchanan Street – people watching is a great hobby.  The room also features the recreation of two iconic leaded glass framed screens, which appeared in the original room.

The Chinese Room is very rarely called this! Everyone refers to it as the Blue Room because of its vibrant colours.  Several of the original features of the Chinese Room including the CCC lights (Catherine Cranston Cochrane), the pagoda styled upstands and the mirrored and plastic screens designed by Mackintosh to resemble the outline of traditional kimonas.

The Willow at Watt Brothers

Located on the third floor of the well-known Glasgow institution, the store itself is very much a visitor attraction in its own right with its walnut panelling, magnificent ceilings and grand sweeping staircase.  Add in the Willow Tea Rooms and you have a mix that is sure to please!

In 1929, the original Watt Brothers store was extended with the architects involved in this work being the firm of Keppie & Henderson, the one-time employer of a certain young architect, a Mr Charles Rennie Mackintosh….what a great example of the synergies between our businesses.
